Executive Recruitment

Thank you for your interest in the post of Chief Executive of Belfast City Council. We are delighted that you are interested in finding out more.

The whole world has seen the journey that the City of Belfast has been on. It is no exaggeration to say that we are a place that has transformed, and we are immensely proud of how far we have come in creating one of the most vibrant and attractive cities in the UK and Ireland. There is a quality of life here to rival that of any European City making it an ideal place to live, work, visit or study. It is the economic and cultural heart of the region with world-class universities, thriving creative industries and a world-recognised technology sector particularly in the areas of cyber security and fin-tech.

Investor confidence in Belfast is strong and we have clear plans to sustain that momentum as we seek to maximise the impact of the Belfast Region City Deal, and to build Belfast’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic moving forward.

We also face similar challenges to many other post-industrial cities, with significant economic, health and educational inequalities. The Council is determined to continue to build on the city’s success, whilst balancing out these inequalities.

Our aim is to make a real difference to the lives of all our residents on a daily basis. In November 2017, we published the Belfast Agenda, our first community plan which is our long-term strategy for Belfast. This shaped our 2017 – 2021 Corporate Plan, reflecting on the needs of the people of Belfast and defining key priorities for the Council to address.

Like all cities across the world, throughout 2020 and 2021, we have been facing up to the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic. In October we published ‘Belfast: Our Recovery’ – a comprehensive framework setting out how we will lead and deliver on recovery priorities for an inclusive and jobs led recovery, taking a sustainable approach to building back better, while ensuring our services adapt and focus on supporting our communities. In 2021, we reviewed our city strategy, the Belfast Agenda, through this ‘recovery lens’.

We have achieved a huge amount in Belfast, but there is still more to do. We are now seeking our next Chief Executive to lead our organisation and our city through the next phase of our journey. You will need to act as an ambassador and negotiator for the City on a national and international stage, ensuring that we continue to build on the strong foundations we have in place, working with 60 elected members across eight political parties, to ensure that we deliver for the people and communities of Belfast.

It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most challenging and high profile roles, not just in local government, but in society as a whole. If you see your future career ambitions reflected in our vision, we would very much welcome your application.
